7K Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
The C50 is equipped with a 7K back-illuminated full-frame CMOS sensor that creates images with low noise for improved performance in a wide variety of lighting environments. This maximizes the camera's full 15+ stop dynamic range in full-frame sensor mode. Using 7K resolution provides greater flexibility in post, such as oversampled 4K60 footage.
Â
3:2 Open Gate Sensor Mode
The first of the cinema EOS line to do so, the C50 offers Open Gate recording options for the use of the full dimensions of the sensor. Select Full Frame 3:2 from the Sensor mode section of the main menu to shoot using the full area of the sensor. Then you can use that information in post to crop or reframe your footage to aspect ratios of your choice. This proves useful when shooting with anamorphic lenses.
Internal Raw and High Frame Rate Recording
Additional recording options of the C50 include 7K60 Cinema RAW Light with three 12-bit recording modes in HQ, ST, and LT. Standard XF-AVC codec is available in 10-bit 4:2:2 for rich detail and smooth images at frame rates up to 120 fps without cropping. You can also record in fast or slow motion up to 4K120 and 2K180. Other recording codecs include XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S for easy-to-manage naming systems and folder structures while preserving metadata.
Â
Anamorphic De-Squeeze
The C50 features internal support for anamorphic de-squeeze. Preview your footage more accurately when shooting in different magnification ratios by toggling the de-squeeze options in the camera menu: 2x, 1.8x, 1.5x, 1.3x.
Â
Dual-Base ISO
Base ISOs of 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2 gamma recording mode maximize the full dynamic range of the C50's sensor. The camera also features Auto Selection to automatically toggle between one of the two base ISO levels and another level while maintaining the dynamic range.
Â
Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II
Keep your subject in focus, whether you're shooting in slow or fast motion. The Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II can accommodate speeds up to 4K120 and 2K150, ensuring that even when using high frame rates, your subject remains in focus. The C50's sensor has improved light-capturing efficiency, which widens the area of the sensor that can be used for autofocus. An internal subject detection algorithm with deep learning technology allows you to set face/eye detection to left or right eye priority in both humans and animals. Animal detection also now includes birds.
Â
Simultaneous Crop Recording
Choose between three format options—9:17, 9:16, or 1:1—to automatically crop your image down when shooting in DCI or UHD 4K resolutions. The cropped portion of the frame will be saved in your selected aspect ratio and will be in 2K resolution. All of this reduces turnaround time when formatting videos for social media deliverables.
Â
Dual Card Slots
The C50 includes two different card slots—one CFexpress Type-B and one SD card. Both slots support simultaneous recording even when shooting in raw codecs. All recording options are stored to your inserted CFexpress card, while sub-recording and proxy options record to your inserted SD card.
Native Vertical Shooting UI
Vertical shooting is even more intuitive now thanks to the C50's vertical shooting UI. Simply switch to native Vertical Shooting to flip your display accordingly. It also supports touch controls for start/stop recording from vertical screen mode. All of the shooting UI, menu settings, and LCD brightness adjustments are reoriented for an optimized filming experience.
Â
Detachable Handle Unit
The included, detachable handle unit provides additional connectivity for your C50 handheld configuration. Two full-sized 3-pin XLR inputs with 48V phantom power allow you to integrate shotgun microphones. A built-in start/stop recording button and a zoom rocker offer easy-to-reach controls when filming low-angle shots.
Â
Comprehensive Connectivity
The camera body of the C50 provides you with a wide variety of ports to create a camera rig best suited to your production needs. Connections include an HDMI output, a headphone output, a timecode port, a 3.5mm microphone input, a 2.5mm remote port, and a multipurpose USB-C port for a smartphone or Ethernet adapter. The camera also features an intelligent hot shoe for wireless audio communication.
XC Protocol
Built-in Wi-Fi facilitates XC Protocol for the C50, Canon's IP-based remote control system. XC Protocol allows the camera to be operated by IP-based Canon control units like the RC-IP1000 or RC-IP100, while third-party remote control panels can shade the camera. Use a USB-C to Ethernet adapter for additional connectivity options. Canon's Remote Control Camera application and Multi-Camera Control app can toggle camera settings as well as control multiple cameras. The C50 supports SRT protocols for direct IP streaming of audio and video to compatible sources.
Â
Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud Integration
The C50 has native compatibility with Frame.io's Camera-to-Cloud technology. Send proxy files immediately after internal recording for efficient post-production workflows. The proxy files don't require additional processing or conversion and can be viewed, shared, and edited remotely.
Virtual Production Support
The C50 can output CV Protocol to multiple devices, easily slotting into virtual production workflows. Lens metadata is extracted using the CV Metadata Extraction plugin on compatible computers.
Mirrorless Photo Mode
Transform the C50 from a cinema camera into a full-featured mirrorless camera with the flip of a switch. The C50 borrows from the familiar EOS R series menu system for intuitive control. Hybrid shooters no longer need to carry two cameras at once for a streamlined workflow. The Full-Frame sensor offers a shallow depth of field with a pleasant bokeh, using a standard ISO of up to 64,000. Still photo resolutions can reach 32MP, and you can reach a maximum of 40 shots per second during high-speed continuous shooting. Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II is still supported in this mode.
